Concert Band / Symphonic Band / Orchestra

Quality music literature is the focus of the band and orchestra classes at Rocklin High School. Programming each year includes masterworks by the great classical and contemporary composers - Bach, Mozart, Holst, Milhaud, Vaughan Williams and many more. By choosing substantial music to study and interpret, we gain insight into the nature of creativity and genius.

Typical activites during the course of the year include 2-3 concerts at the school, participation in the Golden Empire Music Festival at CSU, Sacramento, a Spring Tour, and a variety of performances in and around the community. Each year, Rocklin sends students to regional and state-wide honor groups, based on taped and live auditions before panels of educators. Rocklin performing groups have never received less than an Excellent rating in festival adjudication, and often receive the top rating of Superior from judges.

Placement in the RHS Symphonic Band is determined by live auditions in May. Students sign up for their preferences during course selection in March. Audition music is provided at the start of third quarter so that students can prepare for the placement audition.

All instrumental music students submit recorded samples of their playing for evaluation and grading. Music analysis and practice is encouraged through the creation of a "portfolio" containing the year's recordings and written assignments.
