Jazz Band
Performing high quality literature is equally important to the success of the RHS Jazz Band. The music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus and Oliver Nelson, among others, leads to an understanding of what it means to play jazz. Improvisation is the essential creative element of jazz, and members of the band are encouraged to develop the materials needed to solo convincingly. Incorporating swing, bebop and contemporary music styles like rock, funk, latin, and fusion lends to the popularity of the group and insures plenty of opportunities to play for the community.
The RHS Jazz Band performs in concerts on campus, and is included in the Spring Tour. Festivals scheduled each year include Folsom Jazz Festival, the American River College Jazz Festival, the Loomis International Jazz Festival and the CSU Hayward Jazz Festival. Field trips to the Monterey Jazz Festival are a yearly event. Performance tours to the Rocklin middle schools are eagerly anticipated trips each year.
Placement in the Jazz Band are by live audition in May. Successful completion this course meets Visual and Performing Arts outcome #6.
